David Bailey Talk

                                                                    David Bailey

David Bailey shoots in black and white film of portraits , he photographs Jean Shrimpton in a lot of his work because he said she has demographic beauty and was the women of the time in that period of when he was taking the photos in the 1960's. I would say his work is about capturing emotions within the faces he makes his models pose with it's rare that he would make the models smile. David hasn't manipulated any of his images he just shoots in film and processes them in the dark room.

This is one of many photos of Jean Shrimpton , because this photo is shot in black and white film the background is very plain and bright so the model stands out more and the tones within her skin and hair  contrasts well against the plain background. He has also taken the photo with a small depth of field so you can really focus on every aspect of her appearance.  Some of his images have been printed and sold on the front of magazines like vogue for example where he originally started training and worked for years. His work has inspired a lot of people over the years but the main photographer who has been influenced by Davids work is Rankin. Although the difference between them both is that Rankin prefers to take his photos digitally so he can develop and manipulate them whereas David prefers to just shoot black and white film and process them without developing or manipulating them. For example
Rankin actually copied one of the cover photos for vogue that David Bailey did.

David's work doesn't really inspire me because i don't like photographing in film , but the black and white contrasted colours have inspired me next time i do portrait shots.
